Andre Fontaine was born in Paris in 1921 and became a journalist some 
25 years later having studied history, law and political economy.  In 1947 
he joined the staff of Le Monde and has been the Foreign Editor since 
1951. In this capacity he has followed the day-by-day development of 
important events in world history, he has met many of the leaders of both 
camps and of the non-aligned nations, and has visited most of the 
countries involved in the Cold War.  He has closely followed the development 
of the great crises and attended the international conferences which have 
tried, successfully or not, to put an end to them.  He has been in a particularly
fortunate position to observe and record the history of the Cold War.
