Macbeth is a great tragedy that weaves death, witchcraft and 
battle into a story of a man and a woman destroyed by their lust for power.

Set in ancient Scotland, it opens as the generals, Macbeth and Banquo are 
returning home from war.  When crossing a desolate heath, they are stopped by 
three witches, who hail Macbeth as "King that shalt be hereafter".  This 
prophesy flatters the startled Macbeth and stirs his ambitions.

With his wife spurring on his reluctant purpose, Macbeth finally steels 
himself to kill the king, whose sons then flee for England, leaving Macbeth 
to be crowned king.  But still he is not content, so he has Banquo's family 
murdered.  Banquo's ghost, returns however, driving Macbeth and his 
wife into a murderer's world of sleepless torment.

Unable to bear the remorse Macbeth's wife kills herself, leaving 
Macbeth alone, growing careless of life and wishing for death.  This is 
soon delivered him by the return of the old king's sons, and as the rightful 
heir ascends the throne, peace once more returns to Scotland.
