Lear, in his dotage, decides to retire, and thinks to divide his 
kingdom in such proportions as his daughter's affection would 
deserve. Tragically in doing so, he is bent by the flattery of his eldest 
daughters, Goneril and Regan, rather than the honest plainness of his 
favorite Cordelia. Cordelia is thus dispossessed and departs for France in 
disfavour.

It is not long however, before Lear must face the enormity of his mistake. 
He suffers the cruel ingratitude of his daughters as long as he 
can, but finally walks from their door, out into a wild howling storm. As the 
storm rages the stricken Lear descends into madness.

Cordelia, alerted to her father's plight, rushes back to England with an army, 
determined to restore her father. Their reunion is tender but Lear remains 
confused. Nor does Cordelia succeed in reversing the fate of this 
once proud and powerful family, now destroyed at its own hands.
