The Merchant of Venice is a romantic comedy, unusual for the dark tale of 
cruel hatred it unfolds.  The merchant of the title is Antonio, a gracious man, 
much loved by all.  When his life-long but penniless friend, Bassanio, seeks 
his help to woo the rich and beautiful Portia, Antonio approaches the 
harsh Jewish money-lender Shylock on his behalf.

Shylock has long resented Antonio's open disapproval of him and 
seeing a chance for revenge he contracts a loan with a grim forfeit - a 
pound of flesh.  Antono is undisturbed however, little imagining the horror this 
contract is to deliver him.

For poor Antonio, struck by bad luck, is unable to repay the loan, and a 
gleeful Shylock demands the forfeit.  Just when Antonio's death appears 
certain however, the efforts of the resourceful Portia, cleverly disguised, 
unexpectedly deliver him.  And the tale ends with much rejoicing at the 
triumph of honour and justice in the courtroom.
