The Taming of the Shrew presents the tale of a hot-tempered woman "tamed" 
by her husband.  It is set in the Italian city of Padua, a center of the arts, where 
there lives a rich merchant and his two daughters, Katharine and Bianca.

Katharine is a woman of ungovernable spirit and fiery temper, and there's 
none would venture to marry her.  But then there comes to Padua a certain 
Petruchio set on marriage.  Knowing Katharine to be rich and handsome and 
not discouraged by reports of her nature he applies to her father, who 
readily agrees to the match.

Petruchio is wise and resourceful.  From the outset he affects a 
convincing contrariness with Katharine that swings between sweet courtesy 
and perverse distemper, and far exceeds her own wildness.  And by this 
means he succeeds in subdueing her.

Indeed, so complete is Petruchio's victory he bets with those who would jest 
with him, that his wife would prove more obedient than theirs.  And 
so it was, and from then on Katharine enjoyed new fame in Padua for gentle 
virtue.
